THE ORIGINAL ‘TRAJAN’ ROMANS
These rare, hand-carved Journeyman letters were first designed and cut in Pompeii and Rome around 75 AD. for the emperor Triano (Eng. Trajan).
As a youngster I watched my grandfather carve these Roman letters in his studio in Putney, London. Two thousand years later, there we were, far from Rome with me sitting at his knee in fascination and him doing what he loved.
I began following him, and started painting them myself in 1975, as an art student working on my very first restoration lettering project. Forty hears later I’ve drawn these letterforms thousands of times — out of awe, obsession, and love for their rhythm and timeless beauty.
This is a design that holds history and still feels very modern and very now. The style that adouned the movie posters of Titanic and remain a story-telling theme for practically all meaningful human settings.
